Romanesque Art in Southern Manche: Album is by Marie Lebert, with photos by Alain Dermigny and Claude Rayon. The album says its twelve Romanesque churches are little known, and that they are located in Southern Manche, in the southern part of the department of Manche, in Normandy, along the coast or in the countryside. The album says these churches were built in the 10th, 11th and 12th century. The album says all these churches were built in granite and schist, which were the local stones.
The album shows the Romanesque murals in the south wall of the nave at Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, where the third painting, of which much has disappeared, shows a struggle between a figure with a cloak and a halo and another armored figure who seems to be on the ground. According to abbot Porée, pastor of the church at the time of the discovery of the murals in 1974, the struggle could be St. Michael's struggle against the Devil. The album describes capital baskets carved with a tree on the right and two human heads on the left.
