About this book
A summer visit to Pennsylvania's oil fields gives Ralph Gurney a close look at an industry full of risk and disputed rights. His friend George Harnett, a civil engineer working near Bradford, meets him at the station and introduces him to a landscape of derricks, tanks and rough roads. Their conversation explains the work of surveying oil land and the dangerous trade of the well blasters known as moonlighters.
James Otis combines this industrial setting with a boys' adventure involving stolen horses, woodland tracks and improvised plans. In one episode, George and his companions enlist a farmer's help to block a road before trying to recover a missing team. George's concern for human life shapes the way they approach the thieves. The novel offers readers a view of early oil prospecting through friendship, practical work and decisions made under pressure.
