About this book
The Bride of the Nile is a book by Georg Ebers, translated from the German by Clara Bell. The preface says that the Bride of the Nile needs no preface, and adds that the author has relied on the authority of de Goeje. A character named Philippus sighs "I only wish I could" and goes on to say "You have seen rightly, wonderfully rightly, and yet, as wrongly as possible."
The text says that at night a woman was a prey to agonizing terrors, and in fancy saw herself surrounded by a raging mob and dragged to the river, and that a warder would admit her friends as often as he was able.
