About this book
The Enemies of Women (Los Enemigos De La Mujer) is by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez, translated from the Spanish by Irving Brown. Atilio proposes that the community call itself the enemies of women. A character says there are to be no skirts in Villa Sirena, nothing but men, monks in trousers, selfish and tolerant, coming together to live a pleasant life, while the world is aflame.
The Prince smiles and says that the name must not go any farther than themselves, since people outside who learned of it might think it meant something else. A man named Toledo decorates his bedroom with pictures of Joffre and Foch, yet believes that St. Genevieve, the patron saint of Paris, had intervened in the victory of the Marne. A woman takes leave of the Prince and says she must go, as others were waiting for her, tossing, covered with bandages, in their beds, and anxiously calling for her presence.
