About this book
Serapis is by Georg Ebers, translated from the German by Clara Bell. Chapter I opens with the busy turmoil of the town hushed for some hours and the moon and stars keeping silent watch over Alexandria. Damia is the mother of Porphyrius, and Mary, the pious Christian who had founded the House of the Holy Martyr, was the widow of Apelles, the brother of Porphyrius.
A party made up of Karnis, Orpheus, Agne, Herse and a steward, with two slaves carrying the lutes and pipes, comes out of an obscure alley by the canal connecting Kibotus with Lake Mareotis. A report of the proceedings in the square by the Prefect's house disturbs Medius greatly, and Medius sets off at once for the scene of action. Dada's presence seems suddenly to be a source of much anxiety to Medius, who walks up and down the room, groaning as he goes.
