About this book
The Broken Gate is a novel by Emerson Hough. The contents list names chapters called The Homecoming of Dieudonné Lane and Aurora Lane, among others. An account in dialect says old Man Tarbush laid his hand on Dewdonny Lane and then on the eejit, saying, I arrest you both for disturbing of the peace. Rory Lane faces the whole lot of them and says, Yes, it's true! This is my son, Dewdonny Lane.
In one scene a woman speaks bitterly to a man who sits astounded at her sudden outburst, telling him that men like him, sponges like himself, have made what they call success in all the ages of the world. Horace Brooks tells a Judge that the best thing they can do is to go right on up to the court and get this thing cleaned up, and that they can ask for the quashing of this indictment.
