About this book
A Life Sentence, subtitled A Novel, is by Adeline Sergeant. Chapter I opens in a crowded court with the question "Do you find the prisoner guilty or not guilty?" and the answer "We find the prisoner guilty, my lord." The spectators of Andrew Westwood's trial had expected and predicted the result.
An old man says he will tell the Queen the story himself, and that she will see justice done. Miss Vane goes up to her brother, lays her hand upon his outstretched quivering arm, and says, "Richard, Richard, do not speak in that way!" Cynthia asks, "Father, are you sure that nobody will remember you?" and Westwood answers that they're not likely to know him, adding that he has taken care to change his looks. Sabina tells someone she calls ma'am not to go up-stairs yet and says the man Westwood is in the square and his daughter's just gone up to Mr. Lepel.
