About this book
The Bustān of Sadi is translated from the Persian with an introduction by A. Hart Edwards. The text says that the Sage of Shiraz embodied entertaining anecdotes and devotional wisdom in his Palace of Wealth, the name he applies to the Bustān in an introductory chapter. The text says that the Bustān is written in verse, a fact which adds considerably to the difficulties of translation.
The contents list names, among others, Concerning Justice, Counsel, and the Administration of Government, and Story of Darius and the Herdsman. A story headed Story of One who had a Little Knowledge tells of a certain man who knew something of astronomy and whose head, in consequence, was filled with pride. A story illustrating the humility of the pious says that some one heard the barking of a dog in the ruined hut of a pious man.
