About this book

A sheltered inlet on the Bosphorus provides the starting point for Charles Oman's account of Byzantium. Greek settlers from Megara establish their town beside the Golden Horn, where access to Black Sea trade gives the site commercial and strategic weight. From this early settlement, the chapter sequence moves through the foundation of Constantinople, Justinian's reign, religious disputes, changing dynasties and the pressures of neighbouring powers.

The history makes geography and supplies part of its explanation of events. In the account of the siege of 717, Leo uses ships carrying Greek fire while provisions and severe winter weather shape the struggle around Constantinople. Chapters on social and religious life sit alongside campaigns and imperial politics, and a table of emperors helps orient the chronology. Readers interested in how a capital's position affected its fortunes will find concrete examples across this broad historical survey.
