About this book
Arthur Conan Doyle is the author of The Cabman's Story, which carries the line The Mysteries of a London Growler under its title. With the wife and her sister and Tommy and Fanny and Jack, the inside of the growler is pretty well filled up, so the speaker climbs up beside the driver. The driver is a knowing-looking old veteran with a weather-beaten face and white side whiskers, and says he has been on the streets for seven-and-forty year.
The driver tells of a case in which the doctors proved that a man must have been dead at the time he was shoved into the cab, and four little blue spots came out on one side of his neck. The police, the text says, were fairly puzzled, and there was not a clue to the women, nor to the man either. The driver also speaks of a whole ship blown sky high, and says he could tell many another story as strange as these, true as Gospel.
