About this book
The Curse of Eve is by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The text presents Robert Johnson as an essentially commonplace man, pale of face, ordinary in looks, neutral in opinions, thirty years of age and married, a gentleman’s outfitter in the New North Road.
Johnson’s wife is described as a quiet little woman, with brown hair and gentle ways, and his affection for her as the one positive trait in his character. The text says the wife was unable to come downstairs, and that her mother, Mrs. Peyton, came over from Camberwell to nurse her and to welcome her grandchild. A man creeps on tiptoe up the stair to listen, and through a bedroom door half an inch open catches a glimpse of the clean-shaven face of the doctor, looking wearier and more anxious than before. Mrs. Peyton stands by a soapy bath with a bundle in her hands, and from under the curve of a brown shawl there looks out the strangest little red face with crumpled features.
