About this book
Hopes and Fears, or Scenes from the Life of a Spinster, is a book by Charlotte M. Yonge. The list of illustrations includes the words I find I can’t spare you, Honora; you had better stay at the Holt for good.
Under the heading PART I CHAPTER I, the text asks who ought to go then and who ought to stay, and where you draw an obvious border line. The two children make their appearance at dessert; Owen consents to come to her, but Lucilla will not stir, though she puts on some pretty little coquettish airs. Lucilla cries that death never seemed half so miserable before, and Robert says that it is not always so mournful. A speaker tells Phœbe how far apart they stand in one kind of social scale, and that perhaps that ought to have overthrown all hope, but it will not do so.
