About this book
The Chameleon Man concerns a human being's ability to blend with his surroundings, described as perfect adaptation. The narrator works in theatrical bookings and visits a newspaper columnist when business is slow, finding the office empty on one particular morning. A voice startles the narrator in the apparently empty office, and a tall young man becomes visible before disappearing completely.
The narrator proposes putting an invisible man into Mystiffio's act, but Mystiffio insists that he can astound an audience by himself. Alice tells the narrator that Horatio has gone into the Army and says she is sure he will be useful in the camouflage department.
