About this book
Spring arrivals, nestlings learning to fly, and birds settling into winter quarters give Olive Thorne Miller a way to introduce young readers to bird life. Her illustrated nature book moves through feeding, calls, feathers, wings, and the ordinary business of finding shelter. Later chapters sort American birds into families, with familiar species such as chickadees, swallows, robins, and woodpeckers giving beginners concrete starting points for observation.
The account of the water ouzel brings this approach into sharp focus. Miller describes a bird moving beneath a rushing stream, singing through cold weather, and eagerly entering a shower of water tossed from a cup. Sprague's pipit offers another example, singing high above the plains. These small scenes make behavior as interesting as appearance. For readers beginning to watch birds, the book offers an accessible introduction to their habits and a historical example of nature study written for children.
