About this book
Spring brings new arrivals to the Old Orchard, and Peter Rabbit wants to understand why his feathered neighbors come and go. Jenny Wren, brisk and outspoken, answers his questions while challenging him to pay closer attention. Thornton W. Burgess uses their conversations to introduce children to bird life, combining animal characters with descriptions of appearance, behavior and nesting places.
In one exchange, Peter watches Boomer the Nighthawk dive and hears the sound made by air passing through his wing feathers. Jenny explains where nighthawks lay their eggs, then helps Peter compare Boomer with the Whip-poor-will. These small observations show how the book turns curiosity into practical ways of recognizing birds. Published in 1919, it offers an introduction for young readers who enjoy animal conversations and want to notice more in the natural world around them.
