About this book
Arthur Drews, professor of philosophy at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe, wrote this study of the idea that Jesus was not a historical person. The English text is translated by C. Delisle Burns from the third edition, revised and enlarged. The preface names David Frederick Strauss, who traced the Gospel stories back to myths, and Bruno Bauer, who disputed the historical existence of Jesus. The book is dedicated to Wilhelm von Schnehen.
In the pages sampled, Drews takes up liberal Protestant theology and quotes scholars such as Gunkel and Pfleiderer. He argues that the existence of an historical Jesus does not explain how the Pauline and Johannine Christology arose. Another passage reads the lamb of Revelation beside the self-offering of Agni and the sun's entry into the constellation of the Ram. Footnotes give German titles and page references throughout.
