About this book
The Historical Christ is a book by F. C. Conybeare. A chapter headed Historical Method says the figure of Jesus has been surrounded with such a nimbus of improbability that it seems not absurd to some critics of to-day to deny that he ever lived. The chapter says the books of certain of the critics, in particular Dr. Arthur Drews, Professor W. Benjamin Smith, and Mr. J. M. Robertson, are widely read.
The text reports that Drews, in his first chapter of The Christ Myth, traces out the idea of this Kingdom of God. The text says that in Acts xxv, 19, Festus lays before King Agrippa the case against Paul as he had learned it from the Jewish priests and elders at Jerusalem. The text cites a rule laid down by Renan: An ancient writing can help us to throw light, firstly, on the age in which it was composed, and, secondly, on the age which preceded its composition.
