About this book
Walking at roughly three miles an hour gives C. G. Hine time to notice the old milestones, wooded slopes and roadside buildings of the Hudson Valley. His account follows the New York and Albany Post Road on outings made between May and November 1905, beginning at King's Bridge. Seasonal color, rain and changing views share space with practical advice about light baggage and carrying a camera.
The road also becomes a guide to local history. Hine traces its designation as a public highway in 1703, recalls stagecoach travel and examines surviving signs of earlier settlement. Near Fishkill, he describes a Revolutionary burial ground, the Wharton House and churches that served public purposes during the conflict. These observations give readers a view of the valley through a walker's attention to small details, linking scenery with the buildings, names and stories preserved along an old route.
