About this book

Spring planting occupies Adam's thoughts as he sits beneath an old pine overlooking a New England harbor. His peas, corn, and melons compete for attention with troublesome neighbors and the familiar clam beds below. Yet the First World War keeps intruding on these everyday concerns. When Eve joins him, affectionate teasing turns to the possibility of a submarine entering their quiet waters.

William John Hopkins gives the novel a conversational first-person voice, combining observations of coastal scenery with the pleasures and irritations of domestic life. In a later gathering, Tom announces that he has enlisted and will go to Newport to drive an admiral. Cecily immediately declares that she will live there too. These exchanges bring wartime service into a close circle of friends, offering readers a view of how distant events begin to change familiar routines.
