About this book

The account of Charles describes his refusal to become involved in Italian politics or to break his treaty with the Pope. Charles entered Rome for his coronation, paraded through the streets in imperial robes and retired outside the walls to San Lorenzo. The account identifies the reconstruction of orderly and efficient authority in Germany as the main object that required freedom from Italian ambitions.

The account of Granson says the town was recovered and the Burgundian camp and artillery became the prize of the conquerors. The discussion of the domain court describes its transformation, when necessary, into a court of peers during the reign of Louis IX. The account of Philip IV. says lawyers became the real managers of the work of justice and administration.
