About this book
This second volume includes editorial notes on the play Osorio. They describe four manuscripts and transcripts, say the play was begun in March 1797 and sent to Drury Lane in October of that year, and record that it was rejected. A summary places the story in the reign of Philip II: Maria, an orphan, was promised to Albert, the eldest son of Lord Velez, and is now addressed by Albert's brother Osorio, since Albert was supposed dead.
Another passage is the hymn 'Chamouny; The Hour before Sunrise', which begins 'Hast thou a charm to stay the morning star'. Elsewhere one note describes Max entering in great agitation while a man at a distance watches him with compassion, and another direction has Max falling into a man's arms in a long silent embrace as the curtain drops. Line notes record variant readings from the manuscripts.
