About this book
Latin and Greek verse appears beside English translations in this second volume of Richard Crashaw's collected writing. Edited by Alexander B. Grosart, it brings together sacred epigrams, an essay on the poet's life and writings, notes, and a glossary. The editor explains his efforts to preserve Crashaw's wording while correcting clear printing errors, and identifies the contributors who helped translate the poems.
Biblical scenes give many of the short poems their subjects: the widow's offering, the feeding of a crowd, and Christ amid a storm. In the storm passage, the sea's unrest becomes an image of human fear and doubt, while another version recasts the same incident in a few lines. Readers interested in early modern religious poetry can compare these treatments and follow how compact Latin verses take different shapes in English.
