About this book

Praise, fear and sorrow take turns in Dante's account of his feelings for Beatrice. The New Life (La Vita Nuova) brings prose recollections together with poems, then pauses to explain how individual verses are arranged. In one passage, women speak through a sonnet, and an illness leaves the narrator thinking about the fragility of life. His anxious thoughts become a vision of darkened skies, grieving faces and angels, giving private emotion a religious language.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti's English translation preserves both the verse and the prose. The prefatory material discusses his early work on the translation and the care he took over rhythm, meaning and poetic form. Readers interested in love poetry or in the relationship between a poem and its explanation can follow the way Dante turns remembered feeling into writing, with commentary sitting beside the lines it interprets.
