About this book
The Convert is by Elizabeth Robins. Chapter I has a tall young lady arriving fifteen minutes before the Freddy Tunbridges' dinner-hour, and she is not taken into the great empty drawing-room.
Lord Borrodaile saunters up and offers a long thin hand to Haycroft. Mrs. Freddy asks what the subtlest art is, and the answer given is the art of being silent without being dull. Miss Claxton tells slowly, even dully, and wholly without passion, the story of a hard life met single-handed from even the tender childhood days. A speaker claims a fidelity to the other person that was nothing short of Quixotic, and insists on that person recalling the past correctly.
