About this book

A packed trunk marks Rachel Minchin's determination to leave her troubled marriage and return to Australia. In a small London house, quarrels with Alexander Minchin have sharpened her resolve, while dependence on his money complicates her plans. E. W. Hornung opens this mystery novel with the ordinary objects of a household under strain: gifts, bedding, stairs and closed doors. Rachel's movements through the house give the scene its tension.

The story also turns on the difficulty of getting a clear account of another person's past. In a later exchange, Rachel questions Steel about his years in Australia and his friendship with Alexander. His confident explanations give way to visible emotion when she presses him about earlier concealment. The connection between private relationships and withheld information offers readers a mystery shaped by conversation, character and suspicion. Rachel's persistence makes the search for candor as compelling as the clues themselves.

Ernest William Hornung invented A. J. Raffles, the cricketing gentleman thief whose burglaries reach us through his admiring accomplice Bunny Manders. Raffles arrived in an 1898 magazine story and was collected the following year as The Amateur Cracksman, with The Black Mask in 1901 and A Thief in the Night in 1905.
