About this book
Behind a carefully washed shop window near New York's Stuyvesant Square, Ann Eliza and Evelina Bunner sell small household goods and keep a modest life together. Their basement business supports them, while its back room serves as kitchen, bedroom and parlour. Ann Eliza marks her younger sister's birthday with a nickel clock, a gift whose small cost carries considerable weight in their narrow budget. Edith Wharton builds this domestic story from such ordinary objects and the feelings attached to them.
As Evelina becomes engaged to the clockmaker Mr. Ramy, the sisters' familiar arrangement begins to change. Ann Eliza makes room for their courtship while struggling with pain and the prospect of loneliness. Published in 1916, this short novel examines affection, self-sacrifice and the pressure of limited means. Its closely observed rooms, street scenes and uneasy conversations offer readers a portrait of nineteenth-century city life shaped by women's work and family obligations.
