About this book
The Cricket is a book by Marjorie Benton Cooke, illustrated by J. Scott Williams. A quoted line asks what is meant by acting like this when a birthday party is given, with all the children in the colony asked to come and play. A speaker tells Mr. Bryce that Isabelle has been put to bed and that Mrs. Bryce says he is to prescribe her punishment. Isabelle, the picture of alert interest, sits up in bed and asks, Have you come to punish me? The answer is Something like that, and she says, Go ahead.
Mrs. Benjamin comments that it is hard to believe that this is the freakish sullen child who came to us less than a year ago. The text says that after the notoriety of the Cartel incident the name of Isabelle Bryce was one for editors to conjure with. A wily editor who made his living by scandal outlines an advertising campaign to lead up to the publication of the letters.
