About this book

Sixteen-year-old Roy Porter arrives at Ferry Hill School wearing a crimson sweater given to him by his brother, a Harvard football player. The sweater immediately draws the attention of Horace Burlen, an older pupil who likes to assert his authority over newcomers. Roy answers him coolly, but the exchange gives his first football practice a sharp personal edge. Across the Hudson stands Hammond Academy, Ferry Hill's sporting rival.

Ralph Henry Barbour's school novel follows the pressures of joining a new community through athletic competition and everyday school life. Football, hockey, cross-country running and a boat race give the school year its sporting variety. In one scene, pupils stage an entertainment to raise money for the hockey team, with rival schools and villagers in the audience.
