About this book
The Croxley Master is a great tale of the prize ring by Arthur Conan Doyle. Mr. Robert Montgomery sits at his desk, head upon his hands, in a state of the blackest despondency, before the open ledger with the long columns of Dr. Oldacre's prescriptions. A student making up the morning prescriptions earns his board and £1 a week, and the text asks where the class fees are to come from.
A stocky, bull-necked young miner in tweed Sunday clothes stands at the entrance, gives the name Barton and tells the man there to make up the wife's medicine this very moment, or it will be the worse for him. A two-horsed, rosetted carriage travels the seven miles of the high-road to Croxley, with the miners' carts coming from every side-road. A roar of a thousand voices tells that the Master of Croxley is the Master no more, and Montgomery stands half dazed, looking down at the huge, prostrate figure.
