About this book
The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax is a book by Arthur Conan Doyle. Mr. Sherlock Holmes asks why Turkish while gazing fixedly at the narrator's boots. The narrator says he has been feeling rheumatic and old for the last few days, and that a Turkish bath is what we call an alterative in medicine.
Holmes suggests a change for Watson: how would Lausanne do, with first-class tickets and all expenses paid on a princely scale. Holmes says he much fears that some evil has come to the Lady Frances Carfax. Lady Frances is the sole survivor of the direct family of the late Earl of Rufton. With artificial respiration, injected ether and every device that science could suggest, some flutter of life, some quiver of the eyelids, some dimming of a mirror, speaks of the slowly returning life.
