About this book
The Curiosities of Food, or the dainties and delicacies of different nations obtained from the animal kingdom, is by Peter Lund Simmonds. The preface speaks of the sustentation of the body, and the repairing of its waste by an adequate supply of wholesome and nutritious daily food.
Dr. Burroughs, in a paper on Poisonous Fishes published in a Jamaica journal, remarks that there are five obvious circumstances to be taken into consideration in the incidents of fish-poison. The text says Sir John Richardson was employed by government to prepare pemmican on a large scale, at the Victualling Yard, Gosport, for the use of the different arctic expeditions. The text says the large tree lizard, popularly termed the guana, is certainly not very attractive in appearance, and yet by most persons its flesh is highly esteemed, being reckoned as delicate as chicken.
