About this book
The Art of Living in Australia is by Philip E. Muskett, together with three hundred Australian cookery recipes and accessory kitchen information by Mrs. H. Wicken, Lecturer on cookery to the Technical College, Sydney. The preface says the principal object of the work is the attempt to bring about some improvement in the extraordinary food-habits at present in vogue. The chapter summaries mention, among others, walking six miles a day as the orthodox amount of exercise and cookery as a preventive of drunkenness.
A chapter on Australian wine has the writer say that, were he asked to name the one industry on which the prosperity of Australia must sooner or later rest, he should unhesitatingly answer, on the cultivation of the vine. A mayonnaise recipe lists, among others, 2 eggs, 1 gill of oil and 1/2 gill of vinegar. A recipe says to put a dish of macaroni, sauce and a little dry cheese in the oven for five or ten minutes till a nice colour.
