About this book

Ring Once for Death is credited to Robert Arthur. The opening note says the power of the old gods was certainly nothing for Mark and Edith, a modern, twentieth-century couple, to worry about. Years had left no trace inside Sam Kee's little shop on Mott Street, which still had the same dusty jars of ginseng root and tigers' whiskers.

Edith Williams' hand darts to a bell carved out of crystal at the back of the shelf, and the young man says it is broken, which he explains to mean that it is not complete. A woman who had been a doctor's wife for twenty years, and before that a nurse, finds her husband lying on the ground with a coat folded beneath his head, and the text says Mark was dead. A speaker says Pete Friedburg was driving the old car, and that the speaker lent Pete the keys and the speaker's driver's license.
