About this book
The Dark Tower by Phyllis Bottome is dated New York, 1916, with illustrations by J. H. Gardner Soper. An epigraph quotes Browning's line 'Child Roland to the dark tower came', and the contents show three parts and thirty-one chapters.
In one scene Lady Staines talks with Mrs. Fanshawe and Estelle about parquet floors, London and French, and tells Estelle that her second son Winn has the worst temper of all the Staines. Another passage follows a man's thoughts about a woman who cares about other people's feelings, and mentions Lionel. In a third, Estelle tells Winn that she is living on a higher plane and that Father Anselm agrees with her.
