About this book
The Deputy of Arcis is by Honoré de Balzac. The contents are divided into Part I, The Election, and Part II, Letters Explanatory. The chapter headed Opposition Defines Itself has the mayor, Monsieur Phileas Beauvisage, present himself, accompanied by the busiest notary in town, Achille Pigoult.
The colonel cries Poor France, where are they leading you, and says he will go back to his roses, and another speaker says stay, father, you are the keystone of the arch. Jacques Bricheteau says it is a little more than a year since he received a letter from the father of the person he is addressing, explaining his long silence. Some of the editorial staff ask whether a man now elected thinks he can treat them scurvily, and the editor-in-chief, less excitable, finds Sallenauve’s absence from the royal session very strange.
