About this book
A convent of the Order of Barefoot Carmelites stands in a Spanish city on a Mediterranean island, preserving the rule instituted by St. Theresa with its original rigor. The General’s suspicion becomes nearly certain amid a vague recollection of a sad melody; the woman he loved had played the ballad’s prelude in a boudoir in Paris. The narrator asks the reader to spread the fury of a search over five years, replacing a trifle with a woman, a heart and love.
A speech addressed to Armand argues that religion is a political necessity and a bond connecting conservative principles, the tranquillity of the rich and the rights of property. Montriveau tries to conclude a conversation with some friends, but his clock is slow while the Duchess hurries on foot through the streets of Paris.
