About this book
The Deserted Woman is by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Ellen Marriage. The text tells that in the early spring of 1822 the Paris doctors sent to Lower Normandy a young man just recovering from an inflammatory complaint, brought on by overstudy, or perhaps by excess of some other kind. The patient goes to Bayeux, a picturesque place about six miles from the sea, where he is received with the cordiality characteristic of relatives who lead very retired lives.
A dedication is addressed to Her Grace the Duchesse d’Abrantes, from her devoted servant. A speaker says "I only knew how to love" and asks how one can keep oneself in mind when one loves. M. de Nueil went shooting day after day and came back at dinner-time with an empty bag.
