About this book

News of his father's return throws Octave into panic in Naples. Argante intends to arrange a marriage with Géronte's daughter, while Octave has fallen in love with Hyacintha. His servant Silvestre fears the consequences too. Into their anxious conversation comes Scapin, who boasts of his skill at inventing schemes and offers to hear the young man's troubles. Molière's 1671 farce appears here in Charles Heron Wall's English prose translation.

The comedy gives persuasion the pace of a contest. Scapin tries to make Argante pay two hundred pistoles by describing the expense and hazards of a lawsuit, while Silvestre appears in a threatening disguise. Repeated replies, interruptions and exaggerated claims turn family authority and money into material for performance.

Molière - BDeBooks
Molière

Molière, born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), was the leading comic playwright and actor of the age of Louis XIV. His satires of hypocrisy, pretension, and folly, among them Tartuffe, The Misanthrope, and The Miser, remain cornerstones of the French theatrical tradition.
