The Diagnostics and Treatment of Tropical Diseases is by E. R. Stitt, given as Rear Admiral, Medical Corps, and Surgeon General, U. S. Navy, and its fourth edition is revised, with 159 illustrations. The text says malignant tertian may kill in a first attack and leads rapidly to a cachexia, while the cachexia following upon benign infections is more gradual. The text gives certain figures from tropical countries as fatal results in from 2 to 10% of cases, while statistics from temperate climates show a death rate below 1%. The text says there are three methods in the prevention of malaria.
The text says Brown has had success in treating a case of sprue with pancreatin, 30 grains daily. Ashford is said to have found emetine, as well as santonin, of negative value in the treatment of sprue. A heading reads Section IV, Helminthic Infections, followed by Chapter XXI, Ancylostomiasis.
