Robert Christison's A Treatise on Poisons in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence, Physiology, and the Practice of Physic is presented as the first American edition, from the fourth Edinburgh edition, dated Philadelphia, 1845. The author is named as Professor of Materia Medica in the University of Edinburgh, and a preface to the fourth edition opens the volume.
In one passage Christison reports that bright lead rods of about 47 grains were kept for thirty-five days in four ounces of water from Airthrey, near Stirling, and stayed very nearly as bright. He also describes a house at Phantassie in East-Lothian supplied by a lead pipe, and compares the water of Edinburgh. The contents list symptoms in man, morbid appearances and treatment, with a chapter on compound poisoning, an index and a description of the plate.
