About this book
The Disowned is by Edward Bulwer Lytton. A speaker says that about a year after he was of age his fortune was more than three parts spent, and that he fell ill with drinking and grew dull with remorse. The speaker says he found a letter from his sister, who, having become a widow, had left Wales, and had now fixed her residence in a well visited watering-place in the west of England.
A man named Jasper is wont to say that he would give his right arm to see Master at court, and that the King would be fond of him. The text quotes Rousseau, in one of his own inimitable antitheses, and gives the translation We have pursued pleasure, and happiness has fled far from our reach. Wind turns Lady Waddilove’s memorable relic utterly inside out, and Mr. Brown lifts his eyes to heaven.
