About this book
Two riders, each carrying a hawk on his left wrist, follow the standard-bearers and are described as differing in appearance, years, and bearing. Edith rises in reverence at the sight of a rider she identifies as the King and advances down the hillock with her arms folded on her breast.
Harold asks the reason for his betrothed's silence as he bends his face toward hers. Harold's betrothed says she knows through the lightness or gloom of her own spirit when good or ill will befall him. Harold has sought Edith to speak about a journey he is considering, but finds her dejected.
