About this book

An October stay beside the ocean gives sixteen-year-old Leslie plenty to admire and little company her own age. She keeps house for Aunt Marcia, whose health has brought them to the quiet beach after the summer visitors have gone. Their bungalow stands beside Curlew's Nest, a shuttered cottage that stirs Leslie's imagination. A gathering storm soon gives this lonely stretch of shore a less restful atmosphere.

Augusta Huiell Seaman's 1921 mystery brings Leslie together with Phyllis, another girl who shares her curiosity. Their growing friendship with Eileen adds uncertainty: Eileen seems interested in the closed cottage, yet her distress over her ill grandfather makes the girls sympathetic. Conversations, small changes in behavior and cautious deductions provide the story's clues. Readers looking for a children's mystery will find seaside scenery, friendship and an investigation built around noticing what other people leave unexplained.
