About this book
The Elements of Botany, For Beginners and For Schools is a work by Asa Gray. The preface says the volume takes the place of the author's Lessons in Botany and Vegetable Physiology, published over a quarter of a century ago. The flower of Flax is described as consisting first of five small green leaves crowded into a circle, which is the Calyx, or flower-cup. Five delicate and colored leaves, blue in the Flax, form the Corolla, and its leaves are Petals.
The text says that investigating the formation and growth of the embryo itself requires well-trained eyes and hands, and the expert use of a good compound microscope. A section headed Protoplasm says all this fabric was built up under life, but only a small portion of it is at any one time alive. A list of terms defines Prismatic as prism-shaped, having three or more angles bounding flat sides, and Procumbent as trailing on the ground.
