About this book

Small flower beds tended by their owners are the starting point for M. D. Wellcome's informal gardening handbook. Addressing beginners and amateurs, she explains her plans to discuss seeds, garden arrangement, bulbs, climbing plants and window gardens. Close observation matters as much as cultivation: a simple magnifying glass reveals the details of blossoms, while aphids attract her patient attention. Her advice to farmers' wives presents a few minutes among plants as welcome recreation during household work.

Published in 1881, the volume brings growing advice together with verse and reflections on the religious meaning of flowers. The discussion of ornamental foliage describes leaf shapes, colors and contrasting markings, with notes on soil, warmth and watering for plants such as Dieffenbachia. These pages offer readers of gardening history a view of the plants admired in a home garden and the practical language used to explain their care.
