About this book
The preface describes an attempt to collect, as far as possible, instances of vampirism from various countries and says the subject is regarded more seriously than a decade previously. The preface leaves open, for the present at least, how much scientific truth might underlie even stories regarded as the most extravagant. One story describes a moujik following a corpse's instructions and restoring dead lads to life, only to be seized and bound by their relatives.
The relatives suspect that knowledge of restoring life may mean the moujik was responsible for the deaths, and threaten to hand him to the authorities. The discussion of vampire detection says methods varied between countries where belief in vampires was maintained. A belief reported in some places says that discovering two or three or more finger-sized holes in a grave would almost certainly indicate a body bearing all the marks of vampirism.
