About this book
Of the Buildings of Justinian is by Procopius, as a map heading says: “Map to Illustrate Procopius on the Buildings of Justinian.” The text says the new churches the Emperor Justinian built in Constantinople and its suburbs are described in a previous book, and that it remains to proceed to the fortresses with which he encircled the frontier of the Roman territory. Chryses, absent when the misfortune from the river befell the city of Dara, dreams of a figure who shows him a device to protect the city from any dangerous inundation of the river.
The Emperor summons the celebrated architects Anthemius and Isidorus, and the text says that, “evidently acting under a divine impulse,” he miraculously invented and sketched out of his own mind the plan suggested by the dream. The Emperor Zeno drives the Samaritans out of Mount Gerizim, hands it over to the Christians and builds on the summit a church dedicated to the Virgin.
