About this book
Two sisters governing an empire offer a revealing scene in Joseph McCabe’s account of Byzantine royal women. Zoe and Theodora hear legal cases, forbid the sale of public offices and investigate missing state funds. Their efforts to reform government place questions of justice beside the palace struggles that shape this history. The account also follows Zoe’s choice of a husband, showing how marriage could become a decision about political authority.
Published in 1913, the book begins its historical account after Pulcheria’s death in 453 and ranges across successive imperial households. Its chapters include Verina, Sophia, Irene, Anna Comnena and later empresses. Readers interested in women’s roles in government will find biographies connected to succession, religious loyalties and court influence. McCabe also discusses the difficulties of assembling these lives from scattered references in Greek chronicles, giving the portraits a visible relationship to their historical sources.
