About this book
Joseph McCabe places Rome's imperial women at the centre of a connected series of biographies. Published in 1911, the study extends to the fall of the Western Empire in the fifth century, bringing individual lives into the wider history of the court. Its chapters include the wives of Caligula, Sabina, Julia Domna and later imperial families. The introduction explains the author's reliance on Greek and Latin accounts, supported by coins, statues and inscriptions.
McCabe also examines how earlier historians shaped the reputations of these women, questioning accounts that favour a striking story over accuracy. In the middle excerpt, Lucilla and her mother object to a marriage arranged by Marcus, while competing reports surround the death of Verus. These passages show family decisions and judgments about character becoming part of imperial history. Readers interested in ancient biography can follow both the portraits themselves and the author's efforts to assess the evidence behind them.
