About this book

Fire, damp and insects give William Blades a way to tell the history of books through the things that threaten them. In this 1888 edition of The Enemies of Books, he moves from lost libraries and burnt manuscripts to ordinary hazards such as heat, dust and careless handling. His examples connect the fate of individual volumes with religious disputes, household habits and the work of binders and collectors.

One chapter studies the creatures called bookworms, comparing conflicting descriptions and tracing how grubs pass from wooden covers into paper. Blades combines accounts from librarians with his own observations, making the physical construction of old books part of the story.
